Open Source is a term coined back in 1998 to describe a methodology of developing software, while maintaining an open code base. While open source is a relatively new term, the concepts behind open source software have been around for almost 40 years. Recently, the term has taken on a new meaning for other projects not related to software. There are now open source books, open source music, and what can be coined as a "free culture"*.
